Camerimage Festival in Łódź

December 6, 2009

So the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography PLUS CAMERIMAGE took place this past week– from November 28th to December 5th. It’s the greatest and most recognized festival dedicated to the art of cinematography and its creators – cinematographers. It is held annually in here, in Łódź– the capital of Polish cinema.

The unconventional format of the festival, which awards films according to their visual, aesthetic and technical values, has turned out to be an alternative for traditional film festivals. Apart from the Main Competition, the Festival also contains other events such as Student Etudes Competition, Documentary Films Competition, Music Videos Competition, Plus Camerimage Market, Polish Films Competition, special screenings and premieres, various reviews, retrospectives, meetings and also accompanying events such as art exhibitions and music performances. Many professional filmmakers and film school students from around the world are attracted to the festival by the numerous seminars and workshops organized in the Festival Center and in professional film studio of the OPUS FILM company, led by the greatest modern cinematographers, directors and other filmmakers.

The screenings are held in different cinemas around Łódź, including the Wielki Teatr (Grand Theater). I saw one film at the Charlie Kino called Niceland (Population. 1.000.002). Directed by Fridrik Thor Fridriksson; a collaboration between Denmark, the UK, Germany, and Iceland. About a boy who kills his girlfriend’s beloved cat. To get her out of her depression and moving on with her life, he must find out the purpose of life. It’s a really interesting criticism on how people live their lives– what is really important to them, how life becomes nothing more than a monotonous routine. The acting was great. I say it’s worthwhile to see this film… It’s not earth-shattering, but there’s definitely quality here.
